Follow are our suggestions for post-peel care to ensure a successful peel experience.
Tips for All Peels:
- Discontinue all glycolic and Retin-A home regimen 1 to 2 days after a peel, depending on your degree of irritation.
- Pink coloration of the skin post-peel is normal and might persist anywhere from one hour to a few days after the peel. The coloration should not keep you from returning to normal activities.
- Sun protection must be used every day.
- Apply moisturizer several times daily to keep skin moist and to enhance the heeling process.
- Avoid direct water spray for the first few days post-peel.
- Some people find that a fan is helpful to decrease post-peel burning and stinging.
- If a raw, irritated skin surface occurs in small areas or blotches, consult your physician. He or she will likely recommend using a hydrocortisone cream for no longer than one week.
- If skin discoloration occurs, apply a skin lightener twice daily. You must use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 while using any skin lightening products.
- Do not pick at peeling skin. This will delay the healing process and can result in discoloration.
- Perform a periodic refresher peel at least every 2 to 3 months to continue the advantage of increased collagen production.
Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acid Peels:
- Expect to experience mild flaking and dryness during the week following the peel. Flaking should subside within 5-7 days.
- For optimal results, perform a series of 5-7 peels, spaced 7-10 days apart.
TCA/AHA Combo Peels:
- Approximately 24-hours post-peel, a grayish appearance of the skin might occur. This will last only until visible peeling begins.
- Mild to significant peeling will occur as the outer layer of skin begins to shed 3-4 days post-treatment and should subside within 5-7 days.
- For optimal results, perform a series of 4-6 peels, spaced 7-10 days apart.
- Acne treatments should be spaced every 3-4 weeks for a series of 4-6 peels.
